Back Ground information

  • Cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy or CRGV commonly know as Alabama Rot- is a disease that affects dogs. It damages the blood vessels in the skin and kidneys, which causes visible sores on the skin and can lead to severe organ dysfunction and ultimately kidney failure.
  • First Identified in Alabama 1980s.
  • First seen in the UK in 2012, cases are now growing.
  • Cause unknown, very probably environmental.

First signs of Alabama Rot

  • Painful skin lesions will be visible around the paws and lower legs .
  • Sores, swelling and red patches may also be seen on the lower limbs and possibly on the face and underside of the dog.
  • Sores and ulcers on the dog's face, mouth, tongue may be seen, as a result of the dog licking the affected area.
  • A loss of fur around affected areas.
  • Excessive licking. 
  • If any of these symptoms are seen arrange to visit your vet immediately .

Later signs and symptoms 

  • After three days, signs of kidney failure will appear
  • A loss of appetite
  • Tiredness and lethargy
  • Vomiting

Methods of Prevention 

  • Avoid walking your dog in wet woodland areas, in particular during winter to spring months.
  • Wash down and dry your dog after walks during this period.
  • Frequently check your dog for signs and symptoms of this disease.
